Reflecting the past in the present
The integrated approach of interior design and architectural services preserved the lab's historic qualities while achieving modern comfort and accessibility.

Noyes Laboratory
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

Integrating new technology and accessibility standards while respecting a building's history were key criteria for renovation of a Noyes Laboratory lecture hall, part of the world-renown University of Illinois Chemistry Department.

Repeated renovations over the lecture hall's 100 years had removed primary architectural details, while flooring, seating and lighting were in poor condition. Gorski-Reifsteck Architects recreated the original appearance of the space while maintaining vital sightlines for demonstration lectures and offering handicap accessible seating. Custom acoustic wall panels and an articulated acoustic and gypsum wall board ceiling harmonize with antique wood paneling and trim to create functional, attractive space for new generations of Chemistry students.

Now a National Chemical Landmark, Noyes Laboratory was the world's largest single chemical laboratory when built in 1902. Ten Nobel Prize winners have worked or studied there.
